Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. is currently the largest single investment project in the Chinese shipbuilding industry which is being constructed and it is due to be completed in 2003. The company was a priority industrial project approved by China's State Council during the 9th Five-Year Plan (1996-2000). When completed, the shipyard will be the most advanced in China. The Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd's new yard is being built on a site situated on the southern coast of the mouth of the Yangtze River in the Shanghai Pudong New District and adjacent to the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone. Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. is owned by four companies-China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), Shanghai Bao Steel Group Inc., Shanghai Electrical Group Corporation and China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd. of which CSSC holds more than 50% share of the company. The company's development goals are to decide the development plan at once, develop the yard in several stages and self-fund future expansion. The establishment principles are: · highly intergrated: the shipyard has been designed as a comprehensive assembling shipyard in a highly integrated manner taking advantage of the facilities and specialties of its individual investors and outside suppliers for efficient production. · highly efficient: using the latest production and management techniques to operate a modern shipyard, building ships efficiently and cost-effectively. · advanced facilities: the key production facilities such as the drydocks, Goliath cranes, flat panel production lines and computer systems will be highly advanced. · working process: ship production and staff training are starting while the shipyard is under construction. The development of the shipyard is divided into two phases, taking up a total area of 2.1 milion square metres. The first phase construction began officially on 18th October 1999 and it is scheduled to be fully completed in 2003 with the first newbuilding scheduled for delivery in the same year. The first phase development occupies an area of 1.44 million square metres of which 190000 square metres will be taken up by workships, offices and drydocks. The shipyard has a water frontage of 1500 metres and it will have two large drydocks which will both be completed during the first phase construction. Each drydock will be equipped with one Goliath crane of 600 tonnes lifting capacity for the first phase and there will be two cranes on each drydock when the second phase is completed. Integrated computer systems will be used for CAD/CAM as well as for management extensively. The shipyard contains four production centres which are for steel cutting and fabrication, flat panel assembling, curved panel assembling and blasting and painting. In the first phase, the shipyard will have a designed annual production capacity of 1.05 million dwt and this will rise to 1.8 million dwt when the second phase is completed. Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. is designed to build all kinds of ultra large, high-tech and high value-added merchant ships as well as offshore structures. The prototype ships are 300000dwt VLCCs, 170000dwt Capesize bulk carriers, 160000dwt Suezmax and 100000dwt Aframax tankers. The company will start taking orders in 2001. The company is determined to provide excellent services and high quality products to its customers. |
