Guangzhou Shipyard International Co., Ltd. (GSI), which was parented by China State Shipbuilding Corporation, is the largest modern integrated shipbuilding enterprise in South China and one of the 500 biggest enterprises in China. GSI was founded in 1954, which was reorganized and issued H-shares in Hong Kong and A-share in Shanghai in 1993, GSI enjoys autonomy in export and import operations.

GSI is based on core operations of shipbuilding and focused on building and exploitation of handy size ships. For so many years GSI has adhered to the policy of market variety and client requirement, offered predominant production by means of continuous optimizing of products exploitation, manufacturing design, quality control and production efficiency. In this way, GSI has formed several pillar business including shipbuilding, ship repairing, large-size bridge & building steel structure engineering, port machinery, elevator, refrigerator production line, hydraulic machinery and pressure vessel. For several constant years, GSI has been appraised as one of the advanced companies who contribute to the exportation in the field of national electro-mechanical business and honored as "national advanced export enterprise of electro-mechanical products" and "one of the 100 best enterprises whose products are of excellent quality".

Orientation to preponderant product for being the leader in the world handy size shipbuilding market

Based on its core operation of shipbuilding, GSI keeps ahead with its ability in developing and constructing handy size ships, especially the chemicals or product oil tanker under 50,000dwt. Judge the hour and size up the situation, GSI worked out strategy for optimizing and enlarging production of product oil tankers, and established its goal that focus on handy size product oil tanker, supplemented with balk carrier and Ro/Ro vessel in the coming 5 years, to win in the market with first class cost performance and customization, and be a leader in the world handy size shipbuilding market.

GSI constantly pursue the integral value promotion and a continuable steady growth of the company. GSI applied its mind to internal management optimization, production efficiency improvement and cost reduction. Meanwhile, GSI constantly enlarge its capability in shipbuilding to promote its competitive power. For so many years, GSI has applied new technique, new technology and modern management to improve the ability in new type vessel developing and marine designing, shortening shipbuilding cycle, and enlarging its share in market. And now, GSI has developed handy size chemicals or product oil tanker under 50,000dwt to be the most competitive product, and succeeded in technique development on new vessel type and new product such as Ro/pax vessel and semi-submersible heavy lift vessel. Especially in respect of optimizing hull lines design and high-speed research, GSI always keep ahead in China and ascend in the world advanced group.

In recent years, during the manufacturing of 20,000 to 50,000dwt product oil tankers built for A.P.Moller Maersk Group, which is the largest shipping corporation in the world, GSI not only created an excellent hull line for product oil tankers, but also became itself to be a preferred builder of product oil tanker under 50,000dwt in minds of European ship owners. Presently, GSI shares 10% in the handy size product oil tanker market, and became an important builder who build handy size chemicals and product oil tanker for European owners in the same trade of China, and owned superior cost performance hull line of such series vessels in the world.

EQUIPMENT
GSI owns a 40,000dwt and two 60,000dwt shipbuilding slipways and an 800 meters long shipbuilding quay.
Still it has an advanced pipe-processing workshop, plate processing workshop, section fabrication workshop, a large-scale workshop for special coating, broad pre-assembly yard and several section manufacturing branch factories with technically good conditions.
GSI has strong design force and processing capability, can build various kinds of vessel under 60,000dwt in compliance with the rules & regulations of main international ship classifications. The annual shipbuilding capability has exceeded 300,000dwt with annual output of 11 vessels so far. As at 30th November 2003, GSI has finished production and operation program of the year, and realized "the tenth-five" goal issued by CSSC in advance. Presently, GSI has secured orders with total tonnage of over 700,000dwt representing the total contract value of over RMB4 billion. Each slipway has bean arranged by full order, and the delivery time has reached to the year of 2007. The production and operation are growing healthily.


Reforming traditional industry with informatization technique to get twice the result


As one of the informatization test corporations in Guangzhou, GSI also is one of the advanced informatization enterprises under Guangdong Economic and Trade Committee. In 1996, GSI set up technology center of state enterprise level under the approval of the State Economic and Trade Committee. As evaluated by Chinese Academy of Sciences Evaluation and Research Center last year, GSI listed the 92nd among 289 state enterprise technology centers, the 10th in Guangdong province and the 2nd in the same trade of China.

During stinging competition in the domestic and international shipbuilding market for years, GSI knows that only technology could be depended on very well, and paid attention to using advanced technology to promote the constant steady and healthy development, and offer powerful safeguard for competition.

In respect of deep-developing applied technology, GSI gained outstanding achievements. The office automation (OA) has covered routine operation management. The CIMS developed by GSI has been brought into state and Guangdong province "863" program and Guangzhou applied technology test corporation program, the first term project has been approved, the second term project is under developing. The development and appliance of CIMS, made relevant department of GSI could realize integration of shipbuilding system composed of CAD/CAM, and several management systems for program, realized work hours, material, quality, cost, finance, OA and so on, and realize power link with process line through intranet and database system easily and quickly. Most important, that made GSI be in the leading position among the domestic same trade in respect of optimizing shipbuilding main process, changing traditional production and organization method, realizing "change shipbuilding mode", making resources to play their energy gradationally, uniformly and effectively.

Through carrying out informatization reform, GSI has reached the goals of cost reduction and efficiency improvement, and promoted its competition power. GSI now is focusing on information technology application to the deeper and broader field. Meanwhile, facing with the opportunity and challenge that the state will develop shipbuilding energetically, the management committee of GSI worked out series of short term and long term developing strategy, aim to the "531" goal ("531" goal is that CSSC turn into the first 5, 3 biggest and become the biggest shipbuilding corporation in 2005, 2010 and 2015 respectively) issued by CSSC, and try its best to contribute to China for the goal of being the biggest shipbuilding country.
