Mawei Shipbuilding Ltd. (the old name is Mawei Shipyard), founded in 1866 (Tongzhi 5, Qing Dynasty) is the first shipbuilding enterprise in China. As the source of national industry, she contributes a lot to shipbuilding, naval construction and trading talents. Now she is one of the important enterprises among the pillar industry of Fujian province, provincial ten experimental units for reforms and major construction units in 2000.

The company is situated in Mawei Economic and Technical Development Zone, by the lower reaches of Min River. The total area of the yard is 334000m2, 1765 employees are working in the yard, among them 282 engineers and technicians. In the yard there are one slipway of 35000t, one slipway of 15000t, one slipway of 3000t, one dry dock of 20000t, one pre-treatment line of steel plate with an annual output of 20000t, one block shot-blast painting workshop which is under preparation for construction, 345m outfitting wharf, eight sets of overhead crane with capacities from 15t to 100t, one set of gate crane with capacity of 200t, four sets of numerically-controlled cutter, one set of cold-frame bender and 1446 sets of equipment of various kinds. In recent years, Mawei Shipbuilding Ltd., while studying and incorporating advanced technologies, has made consistent efforts in technical renovation, and realized the technical revolution charactered by the application of computer to management and technical design.
Mawei Shipbuilding Ltd. has the ability to build oil tank of under 35,000t, carrier bulk of under 50,000t, and container vessel of under 2000TEU. In addition to the batch production of 5000t coastal dry cargo carrier, which has won provincial and ministerial awards, and the dredger of world level, Mawei Shipyard has also built in batches of barges with container lifting crane, transom deck barges, large HP tugs, hydraulic splitting barges, purse seiners, multi-purpose container vessels etc., exported to Hongkong, Southeast Asia, South America and Europe. The quality of them is highly appreciated by shipowner and surveyors from China’s ZC society, Britain’s LR society, and America’s ABS society.

From 1990, the company has built totally 14 container vessels of various types for German shipowner in Europe, among which there are 4 vessels of 7300DWT, 2 vessels of 7900DWT, 4 vessels of 8200DWT and 4 vessels of 10500DWT. In addition, Mawei Shipyard holds the orders of 14 vessels now, of which 8 vessels have come into force including 4 dry cargo carrier of 17600DWT, 3 container vessels of 700TEU and 1 oil tanker of 86m.

The company has the history of building and repairing naval vessels. The yard was the factory serviced for the frontline in Fujian Province and repaired a lot of vessels for the army during the initial post-liberation period. The yard developed and had the ability to repair high-technical naval vessels during the 80s and 90s, for example, repaired missile escort vessels and submarine cable-laying vessels etc. naval vessels totally over 10. In respect of shipbuilding, during the 70s, the yard has ever built 4 naval fishing vessels with lights, 4 two boat trawler of 600HP, 719 hovercrafts, oil tanker of 1000t level, during the 90s, the yard has ever built naval mine dredger of 200t and coast guard vessel of 600HP etc.

The company is also making full use of its favorable lifting facility and construction site, its convenience of transportation, its concentration of technology and its advanced workmanship to produce various big-sized steel structures, land-used machines and complete sets of equipment, which are non-marine products.
